"today, our nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature, and we responded with the best of America, with the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could."
-President Bush 9/11/01
"When we helped prevent the massacre of civilians trapped on a distant mountain, here's what one of them said. 'We owe our American friends our lives. Our children will always remember that there was someone who felt our struggle and made a long journey to protect innocent people.'"
-President Obama 9/10/01
i was just starting 7th grade when terrorists attack the U.S. i think i was too young to really comprehend all that those events implied. it happened on the other side of the country to people i didn't know, so i felt pretty detached from the whole thing. but today, when i watched some old news clips from that day, i couldn't help but weep. perhaps years and life's experiences have sensitized me a little more, or maybe the fact that i understand more about the world, government, politics, and justice, but i definitely don't feel detached anymore. i'm so grateful there are people who care about peace, liberty freedom, and love. though we're not perfect, i'm grateful to live in a country uncorrupted by tyranny or terrorists that stands in a position where we're able to help ourselves and others against the men whose hearts have turned completely away from the light. i'm grateful for those who put their lives on the line on the daily to ensure our neighborhoods are safe and we remain a land of opportunity. because of them, i can sit here on my hammock, basically without a care in the world. i feel spoiled, and just really blessed and privileged. but i do feel a sense of responsibility. to do whatever i can within my family and community to help others feel safe, secure, and cared about. and to do all i can to ensure that safety, liberty, and love are values that continue to thrive for my children and grandchildren.
