top ten reasons i love being an english major...

when i do research for beastly but awesome papers i find things like this:

"I cannot but concur with Cicero's sensible advice: beans are a flatulent food that frustrates the needed tranquillity of mind of a truth-seeking spirit."

it's even funnier when i think about the fact that i'm doing research on the philosophy of music as represented in shakespeare...(beans, beans, the musical fruit!)

also, just a little pitch here for an event a friend in my ward created...she came up with this great idea to run for all the people who didn't get to finish the boston marathon (more on that later..i cannot tell you how many times i cried monday and tuesday just thinking about it).  anyway, if you like or hate running, you should join--even if you run very little, the miles add up quickly...you just log your miles until we reach 8,000!  i've done 9.15, and as a whole we've already logged 250+ miles.  i realize we're not raising money or anything, the idea is that those affected know we care and are thinking about them while we run.

wow, i kid you not, while i was typing the title of this post i seriously had to write and delete "english" 4 times before i got it right....ya, it's finals week.

i might die

is it possible to die from pain induced by a needle in your arm?
i have to get a typhoid shot this week--if anything has had me seriously reconsidering a mission it is this. pathetic, i know.

but anyway, what could be more fun than running (walking) 6.2 miles with friends in the beautiful mountains with the leaves changing?
throw a bunch of mud in there and call it a party!

the love of pain

last night i was talking with a couple of friends and they asked why i love to run and do things that put my body through pain...they could not see the joy or purpose in it...actually, it's something i've been thinking about a lot lately...when i first started running a lot it was to achieve the "perfect" body image...well that is when running isn't fun, it's work. but i'm pretty self-motivated and did it anyway...i'm glad i stuck through it because then it got to the point where i did it because it felt good...i learned there is no "perfect body", just healthy and unhealthy...i love to feel healthy, and i love the soreness the day after a long run...i feel like i have actually acheived something good and put in an honest days work...i love to set goals and train to reach those goals...there is nothing that beats the elated feeling of working towards something then completing it all by yourself...i am always amazed at the things the human body is capable of...i recently went to the body worlds exhibit which i thought, before going, would make me sick...but it was one of the coolest things i've seen...it was amazing how complex every aspect of the human body is...what struck me most, though, was seeing the things that can happen when you don't take care of your body...seeing the insides completely re-motivated me to be healthy and take care of the gift i've been given...i love when my brain keeps thinking up reasons i should quit, but my body just keeps moving...

shout out to dave matthews whose birthday is today! 42 years of making sweet, sweet music...

also, for a project in my international relations class i made a blog all about politics...if you're going to read it don't judge me based on my opinions- http://kellir.blogspot.com

wasatch your back

it has been an interesting last two weeks to say the least. tuesday while training i injured my foot. i discovered later that it was either a stress fracture or sprained metatarsol filangy joint (i'm sure i slaughtered that spelling) anyway, i was out of training for a bit--a week and a half before the wasatch back...dr. edwards (sarah's dad) put me on ibuprofen, but i never take pills so it made me really sick to my stomach. i had to quit the painkillers and just stay off my foot. i stayed off for a week then thursday (the day before the wasatch back) i decided i should run two miles to make sure my foot would hold out. well, before i went running i decided i would eat a granola bar that contained nuts and sunflower oil. stupid mistake. i did my two miles with no problem. on the way home i was coughing pretty bad and when i got in the shower i started to break out into hives. i sat there for at least 20 minutes just praying the itching and swelling would go away cause i really didn't feel like having an allergic reaction right then. it kept getting worse till i could feel my face swelling up, which has never happened before, so i thought it would be a good idea to get out and go to a doctor. i told my dad he needed to take me to the hospital...i found it hilariously ironic (after the fact) that he was mad at me the whole way to the hospital because i was having an allergic reaction...as if i could help it...(i just told him, you're the one that assisted in creating me so it's your fault i'm allergic-i didn't actually say that but had i been in a level state of mind i would have)...anyway, it turned out to be the worst case of anaphilactic shock i've ever had and the most traumatic of instacare visits of my life...3 SHOTS! painful ones too...i just laid there wishing i could die as the evil nurses stabbed me all too willingly with long, big, sharp, thick needles...then the nurse started flipping out cause my heart rate wouldn't get above 60 despite the adrenaline she stabbed into me. i had to explain to her that 60 is an increased heart rate for me or else she would have TRIED to stick an i.v. in me--but then things would have really gotten ugly (think hulk "you wouldn't like me when i'm angry" type of ugly). my eyes were still a little marlon brando-ish the rest of the night and my body was extremely worn, but i felt okay. however, instead of going right to bed when i got home from the hospital i went out and ended up getting about 4 hours of sleep that night.

i was runner 3 for the "homestar runners", so i ran 5.6, 4.9, and 5.1. the relay goes from logan to park city and covers almost 180 miles overall. the running part itself of course was fun, but half the fun is in the trip itself. let me just tell you i've always dreamed of being crammed in a van with 6 other people i barely know for over 24 hours with 2 1/2 hours of sleep, eating only granola bars and crackers, and smelling like we all just ran at least 15 miles...i won't say i loved every minute of it, but in all honesty i truly appreciate it now and would do it again in a heart beat. i know the 6 other van members a lot better now and they probably know me better than they ever wanted to.
leg 1 (3), 5.6 miles, 56 minutes- surprisingly, this was my slowest leg. i started around 1 p.m. so it was blistering hot outside and i hate drinking water while i run so i should have died of heat stroke. i ran through a rural area somewhere south of logan and past a lake i wished so badly i could jump in. i eventually started passing more houses with their sprinklers on and a little boy with a hose who happily sprayed me as i ran by. even though i went to the bathroom before i started i had to go again with one mile left. there was no way i could have held it for that long so i didn't even try. don't worry, i had a change of clothes waiting for me at the exchange.

leg 2 (15), 4.9 miles, 47 minutes- i started this leg a little before 10 p.m. after eating subway (which josh lost before running and i think everyone else wished they could have). for those who don't know me well, i am terrified of the dark so i was not really looking forward to being alone in a rural area with no street lights or signs of civilization except rapists and axe murderers...there were other runners on the road, but i passed two at the first and the rest were too far ahead of me to help any. i was too scared to watch the road so i pretty much ran the whole thing with my head up looking at the stars wishing i could just die...or fly to the end, that would be cool. anyway, when i crossed the exchange i ran straight to the porta-potty, sat down and started bawling. i think the mixture of fatigue physically and emotionally really got to me and i could have sat there for a good 30 minutes letting it all out but then i remembered my parents were out there so i should go talk to them..so 30 seconds later i put on a face and went to my team. they asked how it felt and i wasn't about to lie so i said "shit". that pretty much sums up that leg.

leg 3 (27), 5.1 miles, 45 minutes (PARENTAL DISCRETION ADVISED)- after our van finished our night time legs we drove to a jr. high where showers were available and wrestling mats for sleeping. it was probably one of the most refreshing showers i've ever taken in my life. when we walked into the gym with all of the wrestling mats where people were sleeping i felt like i had just walked into a refugee camp. there were tons of people snooring which i found kind of soothing and i was out like a light for 2 1/2 hours. then we had to get up and run our last legs. we started a little before 7 a.m. so luckily it wasn't too hot. before the race my stomache was doing its own thing probably cause i was nervous to see if i'd even be able to finish this leg in a decent amount of time. or at all. once i started though it didn't take too long to get into my groove and i was so excited to be finishing. this was definitly the funnest of all the legs. i felt like i paced myself well and i had a downhill which was so refreshing! i was in such a good mood throughout this leg so i was cheering everyone else on as i passed them or they passed me. i had a feeling i was going to have to pee during this leg, but i put in an honest effort to hold it in. i had about half a mile left and i kept thinking, i don't think i have any clean underwear left. then i thought, it won't be that bad to go commando (i know, way more info than you wanted), not to mention i don't think i'll be able to finish if i stop. when i crossed the exchange point i said, "well, there goes my last pair of underwear".

our team finished in about 28 hours and 45 minutes. i was surprised at how well i personally did considering the circumstances. i didn't even feel pain in my foot until the last leg which was truly a huge blessing. it took a few days before i could eat something solid without feeling sick and my hamstrings to loosen up (i just wish they looked how they felt), but i'm fully recovered now and ready to start training again for my next adventure.

strange dreams and not-so-random (or reverent) thoughts on life

i am now officially a certified lifeguard...despite ending mid-sentence in a conversation with someone to go save a victim DURING my test (yes, i was talking to a very attractive boy) i passed with flying colors! if you are swimming and fear the risk of drowning, no worries you will not drown on my watch! anyway, amidst all this lifeguard stuff i had this crazy dream last night: i was directing a choir and my old teacher (mr h) started getting mad at me for something-i do not know why he was there...then i was guarding a giant pool late at night that was like 17 feet deep and i had to rescue 4 people, 2 of which are guards at the rec center, sarah (my best friend), and an ex-boyfriend...weird...is there anyone out there that knows how to interperet dreams cause i could really use some enlightenment on this one...

speaking of all this guard stuff i have to wear shorts or a swimsuit all the time and everyone knows how i love shaving my legs...they were getting pretty bad so i decided to try waxing them thinking i'd only have to do it like twice this summer...BAD IDEA...anyway, i bought a nair self-waxing kit and tried a little on my thigh before actually doing it to see what kind of affect it would have on my skin...it wasn't too bad and by the next day all the red marks were gone...so then tonight i decided to go all the way...now i am typing this with greasy cream on my legs and some of my pores feeling like they're on fire and looking like a bad case of chicken pox...therefore, my legs will just have to be visibly hairy for a week and a half every month since i refuse to shave my legs more than once a month...moral of the story: go the professional waxing routethis will be me by the end of the summer

i just wanted to throw this out there for all non-runners...as adam sandler famously stated, "peein' your pants is cool"...just so you know peeing your pants is a completely normal (sometimes frequent) thing for runners...why would someone trying to improve their endurance want to stop and go to the bathroom resulting in a lowered heart rate that just takes time to get back up again? not worth it...besides it dries eventually and due to modern conveniences we've been so blessed with you simply throw them in the washing machine and -SHAZAM!- clean shorts!
congrats to sar wads on graduating from high school! i'm so so proud of my desperado sister! and our other desperado heart katie gets home in just 26 days (yes i am counting)! with her in ecuador and sar in school my social life has been pretty lame and i truly miss my partner-in-crime! that's pretty much the update on my summer- just getting tanner and blonder everyday that i wait for june 27th!

peanut butter--bikes--and boys

as i make a sad attempt at finishing unpacking the remainder of my belongings i am musing about this past year and decided to take a break from my diligent focus on the task at hand...it has been a speedy two semesters but i've learned a lot, including about needs and wants...there are three things i could not have survived this year without: peanut butter, my bike, and boys....it would disgust anyone if i counted the number of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches i ate this year...my bike was my mode of transportation and it was wonderful! i had a basket for my backpack and it only took 15 minutes to school and 7 home...living with girls is not easy to say the least...so much hair, attitude, perfume, estrogen, all packed into a box-sized apartment...i really came to understand that boys and girls truly cannot live without each other...that is why all of the people i hung out with were boys...i don't know how much they loved me being the only girl most of the time, but i won't lie, having 5-8 guys to hang out with on the weekends without having to deal with any girls was a huge blessing...anyway, here are some highlights (and low) from the year...

  • the halloween dance...it was the first social event i attended at byu and i went with emmett who had asked me out almost every weekend since the semester started...i was just playing hard to get...actually, it was the first weekend i decided to actually stay in provo and do something, and it taught me that i can find normal people in provo, and i liked hanging out with emmett cause he thought i was funny (even though i wasn't trying to be funny, that's just how i dance)

  • the first snow...none of my roommates have lived where there was snow that stuck on a regular basis, so we did a snow dance and had hot chocolate and donuts at midnight...the next night (or sometime thereafter) it snowed!

  • dating logan--despite the fact that he's not the nicest person on the face of the earth, dating him really was fun while it lasted...plus i learned a lot from the whole experience, including how to throw a punch (no-i never used it on him, but if the need presented itself at least i knew how)...
  • volunteering at the youth detention center really was the highlight of every week...we worked with short-term boys...i use the term "worked" loosely - basically it was our job to come up with some sort of activity to do with them every week and it was a blast! the boys really were great with the biggest hearts and they loved having us there...and our group was amazing! we became good friends and want to volunteer together again in the fall...(picture of the group hopefully coming soon)

  • the crazy stuff i did with the alta boys (mom's old students)...they became my closest friends who i hung out with every weekend...they were good at coming up with unconventional ways to have fun....from shaving cream wars, blowing up stuff in a microwave from D.I.,
swimming in the hot springs to brandon farting on me, sitting around talking, or making a mess of ryan and steve's kitchen! i'm looking forward to the summer, we just got back today from camping at little sahara-what an adventure! (pictures of camping coming soon)

  • the rex lee run! i suggest that anyone that goes to byu, do it! lani and i leisurly jogged it, finished in a sufficient amount of time (meaning like 40 minutes), came home and made chocolate chip pancakes...it really was like a big party!

  • byu splash 'n dash (see related story below)
  • spending my life in the library for the month before finals...i really ate 2 meals a day there and took naps--it's weird, but so fun!

i'm glad to be home...i missed my despo sisters so much and kerri and i have way too much fun beating up on each other, and congrats to mattie and scott-i'm so stoked about my new nephew! but i feel pretty great about life now that i survived freshman year...i've heard it gets easier, and one of the hardest parts of life is over...and the weird thing is, i actually enjoyed it sometimes! (don't tell anyone, but i think in 4 months i'll even be excited to go back...)

BYU Splash n' Dash

on tuesday, march 25th i was walking around campus and saw advertisements for the Splash n' Dash, a triathalon sponsored by BYU...scott and i had been talking about the triathons and races we were going to do all summer, so i thought, hey i'm in pretty good shape and this could be a good way to practice so why not? i signed up for the standard level: 1/2 mile (16 1/2 laps) swim and 5k (3.1 mile) run...saturday rolled around, i woke up about 9:45 a.m., made a big bowl of oatmeal ate the rest of my wheat french bread...i sort of lazed around all morning, read my scriptures, and got ready to go...i got to the RB for my heat at 12:30 p.m. i swam a warm up lap and talked to the girl i shared a lane with..i was a little nervous just because i hadn't ever done anything like that before, but i knew i could finish...we started and i did not pace myself well at first...by the second lap i was breathing hard and knew my adrenaline had gotten ahead of me and i needed to slow down if i wanted to last 14 more laps...i paced myself and felt like the swim went really well (except that alicia, who was kind enough to count laps for me, had to pull me out of the pool cause my arms were so sore), anyway my final time for the swim was 16:34.30...pretty decent for an untrained swimmer....i threw on clothes over my suit and started running...the clock does not stop so there is no break between events...the first mile was sheer hell...i didn't give myself enough time to breathe, and was panting all the way down canyon road...i came to the uphill and thought i might die...probably .7 miles uphill and the whole time my brain was thinking "what have i been doing wrong in my life that would make God take me off the earth right now? what do i need to fix?" yet somehow my legs kept moving...i got to the top of the hill and thought i could recover on the short down slope...instead i got a crazy bad side ache on the left...i tried thinking about other things, i tried running with my arm above my head, but nothing worked...i think that the pain of a side ache is magnified at least twelve times when you're running after swimming 1/2 mile at least 2 minutes faster than you normally do...i couldn't take it anymore so i started walking...i had walked about 30 or 40 yards when this guy came running up behind me, passed me, then turned his head and motioned for me to start running again...he was yelling something but i had my head phones in so i just kept thinking "no, go ahead, just leave me here to die"...he kept waving and slowed down his pace so i reluctantly started jogging and caught up to him...to give you an idea of what kind of guy he was, we were right in front of the creamery on 9th and a woman had dropped her grocery bags, so he stopped, picked them up, and started running again...anyway, he started asking me questions and talking to me to keep me distracted and keep me from walking...i found out he had never done a biathalon, his name is bryan, and he hadn't really swam since he was 12 which is why he had such a hard time with the swimming...we ran together for about a minute and he asked if i could push a little harder, i responded "if i push any harder you'll be carrying me across the finish line" (okay i wasn't that witty, but give me a break, i was in pain)...he said "okay, i'm going to pick up my pace a bit, but you just gotta keep running" i said okay, thanked him and he took off...i was waiting for him to get out of sight so i could start walking again...then i saw him go out to the road, pick up a sign directing the runners where to go and put it back in place then continue running...after i saw that i thought, "this guy just slowed his pace and sacrificed his time to get me running again. the least i could do for him is finish this race running"...so i kept running....it was even more hellish than the first mile...i could feel my breakfast coming up and even threw up a bit in my mouth...every exhale was forced but i kept my mind distracted..i thought about all of these people that have been helping me lately and seeing how this particular experience could relate to life...i came to the road between the brick oven and the tennis courts and thought "i am so done with this race" and sprinted to the finish line...there was bryan, cheering me across...
from this experience i learned 3 things, but i'll let you figure out how it applies to life...
