i finally went to an orthopedic surgeon for my ankle. the physician's assistant was the doctor that checked me out...(my ankle i mean)...he was very attractive, didn't have a ring, and had large biceps. he was being a little more flirty than most doctors are with me, but i thought, well maybe it's just my wishful thinking. then, this conversation...
dr. l-"cool shoes...where did you get those?"
me-"oh thanks, famous footwear. they're the only shoes i have that give me any support besides my running shoes."
dr. l-"besides your wedding shoes?!?!"
me-"no, my running shoes."
dr. l-"okay, i was going to say, i thought it said you were single on your info sheet."
but alas, he's probably too old for me...sigh...and i don't have a reason to go back because now i'm just doing physical therapy.
oh, but if i did...
a big hug to whoever get the movie reference in the post title...

been a long time comin'
-i've wanted to every tuesday for the last 6 weeks
-i came too close for comfort last week
-and today, after much tribulation, my eyes welled up-- and at the question, "am i going to make you cry?" i cast my eyes to the floor, and for the first time in my life, i bawled in a voice lesson...
my teacher made me feel a little better when she said, "if my voice coaches were paid extra for every time i cried in a lesson, they'd be rich"
...she was really nice to me the rest of the lesson
has a teacher ever made you cry?

be careful what you wish for
lately, i've been putting forth a conscious effort to be less judgmental--
i received my visiting teaching assignment--here's what i've learned:
my companion is a girl from the "ghetto" in maryland...she hates utah mormons...she spent the first 18 years of her life being black, and acting white doesn't come naturally to her--that's why she hates living in utah...she hates utah mormons...she's got street cred because she was engaged to a black guy, then a hispanic guy...she hates utah mormons because we're sheltered and judgmental...her high school is one of the top 100 performing arts schools in the nation (she's a bio major)...there were 39 maryland high schools in the top 500, and only 12 utah schools...it's so much better there...and at the same time, in her high school 1 of 6 students is not expected to graduate...she hates utah mormons...she knows how to make very tasty mixed drinks ...she's been in utah for four years- oh, and did she tell you she hates utah mormons?
some things just don't add up, and
if there are two things i cannot stand, they are:
1. people talking themselves up to sound "bad"
2. people telling me i'm sheltered and judgmental because i'm a utah mormon
ya, the spirit was really strong during our lesson

my observations
in the first two days as an suu student, i have already noticed several differences between this and the school i used to attend, good and bad and in between...these are in no particular order, but the first one is the first thing i noticed on my way to my first class on the first day of school:
1. hardly anyone had headphones in on their way to class...maybe it's the shorter distance between classes (as compared to byu) or the stronger desire to actually talk to people between classes...i like to think it's the latter...either way, i felt singled out and put away my iPod for the first time---ever...but really, people are friendlier
2. people smoke
3. people swear
4. guys have facial hair!!!! (i'm more than thrilled about this one)
5. my g.e. history class is going to be fairly easy (huge, but pleasant, shock there)-no papers, tests are non-cumulative, 50 question, multiple choice, all taken from study guide
6. my teachers are prof. or dr., not bro. or sis. (that one's going to take some getting used to)
7. a class of 35 is considered BIG
8. i went into the library to work on a project and the circulation desk lady told me where to find the cd and book i needed...i sort of stared at her for a second, then got the hint and got it myself...weird
9. i was the only one in the study area of the library on the first day of school...even more weird
10. I LOVE IT HERE
peace+love
p.s. i have a crush
his name is joe
he's going to ask me on a date
(that's my unwavering optimism talking-but let's face reality and my luck, he probably has a girlfriend)

there's a first for everything
so i know this is totally a cop-out to take an old photo and write about it, but i promised to keep my blog updated regularly and it's kind of fun for me, so that's the way the cookie crumbles...
in case you can't tell i'm the smallest one, the cute little green m&m on the left-a costume my creative mom made (she made a red one for kerri)...then there's forrest, michelle, and cheyenne...don't ask me how i remember all of their names because this picture was taken in 1st grade and i have no idea where any of them are now...Mrs. Simon was my teacher, and i still remember on the first day of school she had everyone who was 6-years-old stand up...then everyone who was 7-years-old..."kelli, why didn't you stand up?"
"because i'm 5-years-old"
"are you sure?"
"yes...-what kind of question is that?"...
"so you're supposed to be in 1st grade"
"yes, i went to kindergarten last year"
"well let's go to the office and figure this out"...a really great way to introduce a child to her elementary years, take her to the principals office on the first day of first grade (it was not the last time)...first grade was full of significant firsts:

- i lost my first tooth...it was right before lunch and my tooth was very loose...i didn't want to eat lunch because i was afraid my tooth would fall out while i was eating and i'd swallow it...i was in the hall crying when mrs. simon came out and pulled it all the way out for me...it was the only one i didn't pull by myself...i still have that tooth..
- the first time i had to write sentences...i honestly don't remember why, but this was devastating to me because recess was definitely the best part of the day and i had to miss it...i had written maybe two sentences when mrs. simon came in and said, "the 2nd grade hall needs someone for hall duty. if you do it you don't have to write sentences" Seriously?!?! hall duty was a privilege for anyone, and 1st graders NEVER got to do it! and i got out of a disciplinary action for a luxurious task any child would be envious of...
- my first kiss...travis christensen was one of my best friends...he lived just down the street from me, so we stayed friends throughout our elementary years (i was always the only girl at his birthday parties)...one rainy day frankie larsen, travis, and i decided to stay in from recess to play in the classroom...frankie decided to kiss travis for whatever reason...and i thought well if frankie can kiss him, then i should...i always seemed to get into the most trouble/do the dumbest things when i was with frankie...
- the first (and only) snowday in 13 years of school...my brother scott, was in 6th grade when i was in 1st, so we went to school together...one morning we woke up to a couple of feet of snow...we watched the news as we ate breakfast, only to discover school was canceled that day! we were so excited that i ran to the backyard and jumped into the snow in my pj's (which consisted on an oversized t-shirt and my underwear)...i don't remember if scott did too, but something tells me he was a little smarter than that
i will bore you no longer with a meaningless (to you) list of firsts, but if you have any firsts from first grade you remember please share them in the comments...

peanut butter--bikes--and boys
as i make a sad attempt at finishing unpacking the remainder of my belongings i am musing about this past year and decided to take a break from my diligent focus on the task at hand...it has been a speedy two semesters but i've learned a lot, including about needs and wants...there are three things i could not have survived this year without: peanut butter, my bike, and boys....it would disgust anyone if i counted the number of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches i ate this year...my bike was my mode of transportation and it was wonderful! i had a basket for my backpack and it only took 15 minutes to school and 7 home...living with girls is not easy to say the least...so much hair, attitude, perfume, estrogen, all packed into a box-sized apartment...i really came to understand that boys and girls truly cannot live without each other...that is why all of the people i hung out with were boys...i don't know how much they loved me being the only girl most of the time, but i won't lie, having 5-8 guys to hang out with on the weekends without having to deal with any girls was a huge blessing...anyway, here are some highlights (and low) from the year...
- the halloween dance...it was the first social event i attended at byu and i went with emmett who had asked me out almost every weekend since the semester started...i was just playing hard to get...actually, it was the first weekend i decided to actually stay in provo and do something, and it taught me that i can find normal people in provo, and i liked hanging out with emmett cause he thought i was funny (even though i wasn't trying to be funny, that's just how i dance)
- the first snow...none of my roommates have lived where there was snow that stuck on a regular basis, so we did a snow dance and had hot chocolate and donuts at midnight...the next night (or sometime thereafter) it snowed!
- dating logan--despite the fact that he's not the nicest person on the face of the earth, dating him really was fun while it lasted...plus i learned a lot from the whole experience, including how to throw a punch (no-i never used it on him, but if the need presented itself at least i knew how)...
- volunteering at the youth detention center really was the highlight of every week...we worked with short-term boys...i use the term "worked" loosely - basically it was our job to come up with some sort of activity to do with them every week and it was a blast! the boys really were great with the biggest hearts and they loved having us there...and our group was amazing! we became good friends and want to volunteer together again in the fall...(picture of the group hopefully coming soon)
- the crazy stuff i did with the alta boys (mom's old students)...they became my closest friends who i hung out with every weekend...they were good at coming up with unconventional ways to have fun....from shaving cream wars, blowing up stuff in a microwave from D.I.,
swimming in the hot springs to brandon farting on me, sitting around talking, or making a mess of ryan and steve's kitchen! i'm looking forward to the summer, we just got back today from camping at little sahara-what an adventure! (pictures of camping coming soon)
- the rex lee run! i suggest that anyone that goes to byu, do it! lani and i leisurly jogged it, finished in a sufficient amount of time (meaning like 40 minutes), came home and made chocolate chip pancakes...it really was like a big party!
- byu splash 'n dash (see related story below)
- spending my life in the library for the month before finals...i really ate 2 meals a day there and took naps--it's weird, but so fun!
i'm glad to be home...i missed my despo sisters so much and kerri and i have way too much fun beating up on each other, and congrats to mattie and scott-i'm so stoked about my new nephew! but i feel pretty great about life now that i survived freshman year...i've heard it gets easier, and one of the hardest parts of life is over...and the weird thing is, i actually enjoyed it sometimes! (don't tell anyone, but i think in 4 months i'll even be excited to go back...)
